Characters & Vocal PartsSong List
Adapted from Nights of Cabiria, a film by Federico Fellini, by the delightfully witty Neil Simon, Sweet Charity tells the story of a perpetually optimistic young woman, who not only wears her heart
on her sleeve, she's had it tattooed to her arm!

Meet Charity, the girl who just wants to be loved and in her never ending search for true love, sings, dances, laughs and cries her way through romances with the likes of the "strong silent” type, and the "ultra-chic continental movie star" to the "claustrophobic tax accountant” who sweeps Charity off her feet and actually asks her to marry him - but will he still feel the same way when he finds out that Charity works at the Fan-Dango as a dance hall hostess?

Charity’s optimism is set against the all too real world of the 1960’s Times Square. The people who pass through her world are as charming a group as ever to sweep across any stage. From her cynical manager, her hard-core girlfriends at the dance hall, the phony evangelist and his followers, the Coney Island people, the Central Park strollers, and the YMHA self-improvers, the show is full of wonderful supporting and featured characters. Everyone is interesting and entertaining.

It is also a dancers showcase with great opportunities for dramatic movement in the ensemble for the beginning dancer to full-out-Fosse-style dance for more advanced dancers. Large musical numbers include Big Spender, The Frug, The Rhythm of Life, There's Gotta Be Something Better Than This, I'm a Brass Band, I Love to Cry at Weddings and If my Friends Could See Me Now.

Sweet Charity is a bright, witty and sophisticated show in every sense.
Coleman’s music is pulsating and Neil Simon has a particular talent for looking at the truly amusing side of life. With challenging lead roles, numerous featured roles, entertaining dance and
countless cameo moments for the ensemble -

It’s a show that is sure to please both cast and audiences alike!

LITTLE OR NO ACTING OR DANCING EXPERIENCE BUT YOU STILL WANNA HAVE SOME FUN, FUN FUN?

The ensemble features excellent music numbers and many character moments for men and women of all ages that requires various levels of dance from minimal to advanced. The ensemble plays all the eclectic and witty characters that Charity encounters on her way to find love.......the visitors in the park.......the commuters on the cross town bus.......the tourists at Coney Island (I’m a Brass Band).......the high brow patrons of the very chic Pompeii Club ( Frug ).......the devout followers of Big Daddy’s Rhythm of Life Church! While the Frug is one of the longest ensemble dance numbers ever done, you do not need to be a Fosse expert to join in the fun!

In addition to the musical ensemble work, there are numerous specific characters with very funny moments that move Charity and the story forward. Some of the characters are the man with the dark glass ( the silent boyfriend who dumps Charity – in the lake ).......the park dwellers and strollers who encourage each other to ignore the drowning lady in the lake.......the cops who interview her.......the “not-so-blind” panhandlers outside the Pompeii club.......the characters of Coney Island, the “Brothers” who assist Big Daddy and Daddy’s “Rhythm Choir”.

There are many other characters that include:
Name Gender Vocal Part Role Type
Charity Female Mezzo/Alto The spunky yet vulnerable leading lady looking for love in all the wrong places. She is enthusiastic, determined and captivating. “Stage age” is old enough to have experienced disappointment in love, young enough to still believe in happily ever after! She has several long solos that require advanced character, vocal and dance skills as well as strong comedic timing. High energy / demanding role; Charity is hardly ever off the stage.
Oscar Lindquist Male Baritone The claustrophobic, neurotic tax accountant who falls in love with Charity. Sweet, charming in a “goofy/geeky” sort of way, but able to be “the romantic hero” as well. Requires strong character and vocal work – good comedic timing and physical humor (when stuck in elevator) but minimal dance needs. Age flexible as appropriate to Charity.
Vittorio Vidal Male Baritone A Famous “Italian” film star who is both charming and a bit full of himself, Vittorio is the “cad” you can’t help liking. He first picks up Charity ( because he can ) in response to being “dumped” by Ursula….. but after a short time with her he sees her genuine sincerity, and exposes some of his own. Can double in ensemble after appearance in Act 1.
Nickie Female Mezzo One of Charity’s older and wiser dearest of friends at the dance hall. She and Helene are very protective of Charity, though they share a more realistic (AKA “tarnished” ) view of “happily ever after”. Strong harmony work in the duet “Dream Your Dream”. Some solo dance work in “Something Better…”. Will double as dancer in the FRUG number (and may do ensemble as needed)
Ursula Female The high class, pouty, seductive girlfriend who “dumps” Vittorio, then wants him back – a single but wonderfully funny “dramatic” scene – will join ensemble after act 1 appearance
Helene Female Alto One of Charity’s older and wiser dearest of friends at the dance hall. She and Nickie are very protective of Charity, though they share a more realistic (AKA “tarnished” ) view of “happily ever after”. Strong harmony work in the duet “Dream Your Dream”. Some solo dance work in “Something Better…”. Will double as dancer in the FRUG number (and may do ensemble as needed)
Daddy Johann Sebastian Brubeck Male Baritone He is the dynamic and charismatic precursor to the over-the-top televangelists. He and his “groovy” band of assistants lead the Rhythm of Life church in a local garage. While you can feel the “slick”, he does know how to whip up a crowd. (Can double in ensemble)
Herman Male Tenor The grouchy “ol’man-with a-heart”is the manager of the Fandango Ballroom. He runs a tight ship but it’s obvious he loves “his” girls, in fact, he Loves to Cry at Weddings. Moderate scene work but significant 11:00 vocal number!
The "Girls" At The Club Female 7-10 dancers of various styles, shapes and ages who make up Charity’s co-workers/peers at the FanDango Ballroom. Some are younger, (“Rosie” is brand new) while others have been here for some time now. Many are named characters with dialogue at various times throughout the show. They do Big Spender, Something Better Than This and Cry at Weddings as hostesses – They will double as dancers in the FRUG and other ensemble numbers as needed.
The FanDango Customers Male These are the “regulars”… the men who hang out , dance with, and come to know the hostesses of the FanDango…. While they have little or no dialogue in this setting they are clear characters who help set the stage and the mood. They do dance with the girls, and join the gang for the Bridal shower. These same men double in all ensemble work.
